A chief would meet with the Elders of the village to make decisions about things like who to trade with, what to trade and whether or not to go to war. The chief would listen carefully to the views and advice of the Elders and other community members. The counsel offered by the Elders and the community members was very important to helping the Chief make a good decision for the whole community. Even though the final decision rested with the Chief, the process was one of consensus, meaning that all members of the community agreed with the decision. All the important decisions facing the village were dealt with this way. The values governing the society were passed down through the family. The Chief was responsible to the people, making sure the values were followed. If a member of the society committed a crime such as murder or rape they would be banished from the community. If a lesser crime was committed by an individual they may be shunned by the community for a period of time. |
